experience tour
Experience an immersive tour into the rich heritage of Gango-ji, Japan’s oldest Buddhist temple, whose history stretches back even further than that of Tōdaiji.
Together with the head priest, you will encounter the living traditions and storied past of this sacred site.
The program includes a Buddhist ritual, a guided walk with the priest through present-day Naramachi—once part of Gango-ji’s vast temple precinct—an elegant gagaku (court music) performance, a tasting of select local sake, and an illuminated viewing of the original pagoda foundation stones. To conclude, you will enjoy a seasonal dinner at a Michelin-listed restaurant in Naramachi, featuring local ingredients and a special miso said to have been devised by Gango-ji monks in ancient times.
